Shifts in Product Distribution in Microwave Plasma Methane Pyrolysis Due to Hydrogen and Nitrogen Addition

Methane pyrolysis can produce many valuable products besides hydrogen, e.g., C2 compounds or carbon black. In the conditions provided by microwave plasma, distribution of these might be shifted addition hydrogen and nitrogen. this work, different ratios H2:CH4, ranging from 0:1 to 4:1, were tested. The most unambiguous promising result was obtained for highest H2:CH4 ratio. For ratio, a significant improvement in methane conversion rate observed (from 72% 95%) along with increase C2H2 C2H4 yield selectivity. results support hypothesis that H radicals present plasma are responsible improving conversion, while presence molecular shifts product towards compounds. Based on balance, output at cost solid carbon. At same time, resulted formation bigger particles. Finally, both nitrogen completely inhibited. Hydrogen cyanide main formed instead soot some acetylene.
